The Wines of Washington by Jamie Smith At the same latitude as Bordeaux, it is little wonder that Washington (yes the state) is making world class wines. They have only been producing wine since the late 60’s but have made tremendous strides in quality.
They excel in the Bordeaux varietals, red & white, and make some of the best Syrah from the USA The reds are similar with minerality and sweet cedar notes, but have juicy dark cherry flavors & bakers chocolate on the palate. The whites are full bodied with dried tropical fruit nodes, food friendly acidity and old world charm. All of Washington’s wines share traits of both new and old world winemaking
styles. On the world market the wines are value priced and most are of a very high quality. Wines from Washington are widely available and represent an alternative domestic choice that is well worth the look. Jamie Smith is a Sommelier at Aureole - the only restaurant in Las Vegas to garner the exclusive Wine Spectator’s “Grand Award.”
